Local Government Act 1995 - Advanced has been designed to enhance the ability of participants to comply with their role as professionals under the Local Government Act.

The course discusses our legal system, how to understand and interpret Statutes and how to relate this specifically to the Local Government Act 1995. Other relevant Acts and Regulations are referred to throughout the course.

Participants will experience using research skills to monitor and assess compliance and the impact of legislation on administrative action and Council decisions. Participants will increase their knowledge and skills in order to respond to questions or provide information to Council and Councillors.

Target Audience

All Managers and Officers who need to comply with their role as professional advisers under the Local Government Act 1995.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of completing this program, participants will be better able to understand the way in which the Local Government Act 1995 impacts on Local Government activities through the following sessions:

  • introduction to our legal system;
  • Acts, Regulations and Cases;
  • the role of the General Function, the Legislative Function and the Executive Function;
  • Delegation, Authorisations and Appointments;
  • compliance in action;
  • governance and governing; and
  • the mechanics of advice to Council and Elected Members.
