Local roads receive Easter road safety blessing
Local Councils are joining forces to help the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Program bless local roads this Easter.
The Blessing of the Roads campaign aims to create awareness for all road users of the need to be courteous, take care and have common sense when travelling on our roads over the extremely busy Easter long weekend.
Association President Cr Bill Mitchell said local road safety campaigns such as the Blessing of the Roads reinforced road safety as a whole of community issue.
“The Blessing of the Roads campaign brings key stakeholders and members of the community together to raise awareness of road safety in their local community – an issue that is even more crucial this year with the untenable number of fatal crashes on our roads,” Cr Mitchell said.
“Ceremonies held throughout the State are organised and implemented by the local community. Easter blessings are delivered by local religious leaders and speeches are made by the Mayor or Shire President and by local police.
“This community approach helps reinforce the key Easter road safety messages; slow down, don’t drink and drive, wear seatbelts, ensure children are properly restrained and take breaks to avoid fatigue when travelling.”
Blessing of the Roads also provides an opportunity to remember family and friends who have lost their lives in road crashes and to recognise the dedication and efforts of emergency services personnel who deal with road trauma on a daily basis.
This Easter we need to plan ahead – leave enough time to get to your destination, change drivers and stop and revive at one of the many coffee stops or Driver Reviver locations run by volunteers throughout WA.
A Blessing of the Roads ceremony will be held at the City of Wanneroo’s Jacaranda Amphitheatre, 23 Dundebar Road, Wanneroo at 10.15am on Thursday 5 April 2007. The ceremony will involve the City of Wanneroo, local schools, members of the community and blessings by local religious leaders.
Members of the community are invited to attend the event.
Other Blessing of the Roads ceremonies are being held in the lead up to Easter in Collie, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Mundaring.
