Fatality free Christmas on the wish list this year
A fatality free festive season is possible if we all plan our journeys and take responsibility for our actions on the roads this Christmas.
That is the message from the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Program as it launches the 11th annual White Ribbons for Road Safety campaign today.
The White Ribbons for Road Safety campaign will run from Monday 3 December 2007 until Monday 7 January 2008.
WALGA President Cr Bill Mitchell said that although most people in the community did the right thing by planning their journeys over the festive season, the fact that there were still deaths and serious injuries on our roads was evidence that some people still weren’t heeding the message.
“We all know exactly how we are supposed to behave on the roads – don’t drink and drive, don’t speed, always wear a seatbelt and don’t drive tired – and there really is no excuse not to do this,” Cr Mitchell said.
“The community hears these messages time and time again and even though most people take note, the White Ribbons campaign provides the opportunity for people to consciously think about it and come back safely every time they drive, walk or ride this Christmas.
“Don’t risk adding your name to the road toll or the road crash injury list. Plan your travels during Christmas and New Year and be in good health to enjoy everything 2008 has to offer.
“Think about the big road safety picture - safe drivers, travelling in safe cars, on safer roads, travelling at safe speeds,” he said.
White Ribbons will be available free of charge from participating Council offices and police stations throughout the State.
