Local Government Voice at 2020 Summit

Local Government in Western Australia will have a voice at the Prime Minister's Australia 2020 Summit.

WA Local Government Association deputy chief executive officer, Wayne Scheggia, has been selected as one of the 1000 participants for the national Summit and one of only 67 chosen from WA.

Also selected are Professor Fiona McKenzie and Professor Greg Craven who were members of WALGA’s Systemic Sustainability Study panel that set the groundwork for the recently launched 10-year draft plan for the future of the sector.

Established by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the Summit plans to “bring together some of the best and brightest brains from across the country to tackle the long term challenges confronting Australia’s future”.

Mr Scheggia, who has more than 25 years experience in Local Government, is the only individual selected from the sector in Western Australia.

The Summit, to be held at Parliament House in Canberra on April 19 and 20, will bring together the participants to debate and develop long-term options across 10 critical areas.

Mr Scheggia has been selected to participate in the group that will examine the future of Australian governance: renewed democracy, a more open government (including the role of the media), the structure of the Federation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

WALGA President Cr Bill Mitchell congratulated Mr Scheggia on being selected to participate at the Summit.

“It is important for Local Government in Western Australia to have a voice at the Summit and it is an honour for WALGA that the individual selected is one of our most senior executives,” Cr Mitchell said.

“The Association has led the debate for the future of Local Government in WA of which Mr Scheggia has played a significant role, so it is most appropriate that he also be invited to contribute at the Summit”.
