Vibrant Banner Display Brings City to Life
Dancing sheep, rusty dogs and giant sea dragons are just some of the images that have been chosen to represent Local Governments around the State in this year’s Banners in the Terrace Competition.
Now in its 17th year, the annual competition held by the WA Local Government Association is one of the State’s largest single community arts projects, and each year brings St Georges and Adelaide Terraces alive with colourful works from communities around the State.
WALGA Chief Executive Officer, Ricky Burges said the 68 wonderful banners representing WA Local Governments will be on display between Milligan Street and Hill Street until Saturday, 15 August.
“This year’s theme of renewal and innovation was quite broad so entrants were really able to use their imagination,” Ms Burges said.
“The Association is very proud to bring this competition to the community each year as it is a great way to show the unity between Local Governments around the State whilst getting the public involved in a fun and relaxed way.”
Held in conjunction with the WA Local Government Convention and supported by the City of Perth, banners are painted by community groups, art groups and school children are entered in one of five categories covering school ages, community/non professional and professional artists.
“Many hours of work has resulted in some fantastic banners this year, so I encourage everyone to go have a look along the Terraces over the next two weeks to enjoy the wonderful imagery on show,” Ms Burges said.
The winners of the competition will be announced this Thursday at the 2009 WA Local Government Convention and Exhibition.
