Council Cooperation on Road Safety
Cooperation between three Local Governments to ensure their shared road infrastructure remains safe has seen the Shires of Boddington, Collie and Harvey receive awards at the 2009 Roads and Transport Forum held yesterday.
A joint initiative by the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Program and the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (WA Division), nine WA Local Governments were awarded at the Forum for their innovation and practice in the area of road safety.
WALGA President, Cr Bill Mitchell said that all recipients should be congratulated for their commitment to road safety, and their long term vision to see road crashes eliminated as a major cause of premature death in WA.
“It is important to note that road safety is not just about behaviours such as drink driving and speeding,” Cr Mitchell said.
“As demonstrated by the awards recipients yesterday, a continual dedication to road safety means engaging and educating the community on road safety, encouraging people to purchase safer vehicles, working to achieve reduced travel speeds, and planning for and maintaining safer road networks for the future.”
